OREGON DISTRICT HAUNTFEST 2021
THE HAUNTFEST BRANDING WAS ANOTHER PROJECT WHERE THE ORGANIZATION WAS FAMILIAR WITH ME AND MY ARTRWORK. THE OREGON DISTRICT BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS ONLY REQUIREMENTS WAS THE DESIGNS NEED TO BE SPOOKY TO OF COURSE GIVE OF THE THEM OF HALLOWEEN FOR THEIR ANNUAL HAUNTFEST EVENT. AND THEY ALSO WANTED CHARACTERS USED WITHIN THE AESTHETIC FOR PLAYFUL UNDER TONES. FOR THE CHARACTERS I HAD THE PERFECT IDEA. I USED MY BRAND MASCOT TED AND PUT A MASK ON HIM SIMILAR HOW MOST PEOPLE OR CHILDREN DO FOR HALLOWEEN, AND HAD HIM BEING CHASED BY A WOE (WHICH IS LIKE A GHOST AND IS ALSO APRT OF MY T.E.D. BRAND). INITIALLY THE SLIME DRIPPIN IN THE BACKGROUND WAS RED AND THE FLYERS HAD A DECAPTITED TORSO AND SKULL ON THEM. THIS WAS DEEMED TO GRUESOME BY THE ASSOCIATION SO I CHANGED THE SLIME TO A BRIGHT GREEN AND REPLACE THE DECAPITATED TORSO AND SKULL WITH A CREEPY RODENT IN THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE DESIGN.
I TREATED THE LOGO LIKE A REIMAGINING OF THE BATMAN LOGO. THE WAY THE BAT WINGS ARC UP AT THE BOTTOM AND PLATEAU AT THE TOP INSPIRED THE OVER ALL SHAPE I WANTED THE LETTERS TO BE IN. THE LETTERS THEM SELVES WERE AN EDITED VERSION OF THE SHLOP FONT. THE LETTERS WERE STRETCHED THEN I ADDED DESIGN OVER AND UNDER THEM TO GIVE THEM DEPTH. THE BLACK BASE COLOR OF THE FONT ACT AS THE TOP LAYER OF FLESH WHILE I USED TONES OF RED TO REPRESENT BLOOD AND GUTS UNDER THE TOP LAYER. FOR EVEN MORE DEPTH I MADE SOME PARTS OF THE LETTER LOOK LIKE EXPOSED BONE AND USED SHADOWS TO PUSH FURTHER BACK AS IF THEY WERE BEING REVEALED FROM WITHIN.
THE INITIAL COLOR PALETE WAS INSPIRED BY FALL BUT IT WASN’T DARK ENOUGH FOR THE TONE WE WERE GOING FOR. WE EVENTUALLY GOT TO PURPLE, BLACK GREEN, AND OLIVE. THESE COLOR CAN BE SEEN THROUGH THE FLYER DESIGNS WITH OVERLAYED SPIDER WEBS, SPIDERS AND BATS TO BUILD UP THE UNEASY TONE OF “SPOOKY”. THERE IS ALSO A SUBTLE CALL BACK TO MY MURAL DESIGN THAT I PAINTED THE YEAR PRIOR, ON THE MAIN POSTER.
